We may not know when the next disaster will strike, but if COVID-19 taught us anything, it’s that being unprepared can deepen the challenges already faced by people with disabilities. As vocational rehabilitation (VR) professionals, it’s more important than ever that our planning reflects the unique and varied needs of the disability community, including the people we serve and their caregivers.
Since the pandemic, we've seen how critical VR and community agencies are in reducing the impact of emergencies. From helping people stay connected to employment and services during shutdowns to navigating sudden changes in health, housing, and support systems, the role of VR has expanded. Now is the time to build on what we’ve learned.
VR and partner agencies can make a meaningful difference by:
- Building strong community alliances that support coordinated services before, during, and after a disaster
- Communicating clearly and respectfully with individuals and communities
- Listening to and validating the concerns and needs of people with disabilities
- Sharing accessible tools and guidance to help individuals develop personalized preparedness plans
- Providing consistent, reliable information and support in times of crisis
Thoughtful, informed planning does more than reduce harm during a disaster. It strengthens trust, builds relationships, and supports long-term goals for employment, independence, and well-being.
