Around 10 million adults have attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder or ADHD. Research has revealed that this neurodevelopmental disorder impairs memory, ability to manage and prioritize thinking, and the ability to consider future consequences of present actions. These executive function deficits can make work extremely challenging.

“…research shows adults with ADHD lose 22 days of productivity each year due to ADHD.”

— From the Attention Deficit Disorder Association at ADD.ORG

According to the Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) website, those who have the condition are often unemployed or underemployed. In addition, research shows that people who have ADHD earn roughly 17% less than their peers who don’t.

Approximately 5% of adults have ADHD.
That represents over 11,000,000 people in the US.
It occurs in both men and women and, in the majority of cases, persists throughout the lifespan.

    ADHD and Work

ADHD is recognized as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act. According to the Attention Deficit Disorder Association, some individuals with ADHD may need accommodations in school or the workplace to support their challenges.

For adults needing accommodations in the workplace, it’s important to understand the law, consider when to disclose a disability, and understand how to ask for an accommodation. It is also important to consider what accommodation may be helpful or needed. Some job seekers or employees may seek assistance in navigating these issues. Learn more from the Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) article on “Asking for Workplace Accommodations.”
